The Same Scar

The dust and granite ate us whole, teeth scraping our sweated foreheads, we slid down her tongue, hands clasped.

Her saliva clung to us, an unshakeable heat. Each breath, cracked and raw, longing for adventure and simultaneous peace, unchanged for a decade. To know our bodies and the land which we are upon. The escarpment to the East, the curve of my throat.

I watched you stagger, your knee hitting the ground, the spittle.

Resting our bodies into the earth, stage frightened stars began their performance in the sky, mirroring the victory in our eyes. The same recital every evening.

As the sound of the distant helicopter approaches, I glance to the scar upon your cheek. The same scar every evening.
